Defenders of Wildlife’s Center for Conservation Innovation released a report on the five leading drivers of biodiversity loss in the United States. This symposium is the fourth in a national series of biodiversity events to present and showcase those challenges.

Colorado and its biodiversity are particularly threatened by two of the five main threats to biodiversity. Colorado’s main threats are climate change and habitat loss. On average, this state is likely to see some of the most drastic changes in climate and habitat loss by the end of the century. More intense precipitation and rising temperatures will impact species and their habitats. Greater frequency in summer droughts would reduce water levels in important freshwater habitats in this region. This symposium will examine the leading causes of and solutions to the biodiversity crisis in Colorado and help stimulate meaningful actions, while highlighting current actions, within the state to address some of the leading drivers of biodiversity decline.

During the Colorado in Focus symposium you will hear from a panel of wildlife and conservation experts who will speak on the biodiversity loss drivers and solutions in the state. The panelists include:

  • Representative Alex Valdez, Colorado State Representative
  • Dr. Lindsay Rosa, Vice President of Conservation Innovation and Research, Defenders of Wildlife
  • James Rattling Leaf Sr., Tribal Engagement Specialist, University of Colorado
  • Dr. Barry Noon, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology, Colorado State University
  • Dr. Ana Davidson, Joint Faculty Member in the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology, Colorado State University; Research Scientist III with the Colorado Natural Heritage Program

Join us as we highlight the biodiversity crisis and its leading drivers, as well as helpful actions already underway. Attendees will come away more knowledgeable and able to support action in the field, at their state capital in Denver, and on Capitol Hill, to meet current and future challenges facing biodiversity.
